After 15 years as interior designer, I have created these six rules to apply when arranging rental furniture:

For example, in a living room, create a seating area that promotes conversation and allows for comfortable TV viewing.
  2. Maximize space: Rentals often have limited square footage, so it’s crucial to maximize the available space. Avoid overcrowding rooms with too much furniture, and consider using multi-functional pieces like storage ottomans or fold-out tables to save space.
  3. Create a balanced layout: Aim for a balanced layout that allows for easy movement throughout the space. Avoid blocking pathways or doorways with furniture, and ensure there’s enough space between pieces for comfortable navigation. Consider the visual balance of the room, too, by distributing larger pieces of furniture evenly and using smaller items to fill in gaps.
  4. Incorporate your personal style: Just because you’re working with rental furniture doesn’t mean you can’t infuse your personal style into the space. Use accessories like throw pillows, blankets, artwork, and plants to add color, texture, and personality to the room.
